Scaffold Safety Checklist


Safety aspects that needs to be ensured while using a scaffolding at a construction site 

1          Inspect all components used for assembly of scaffolding prior to assembly and each use          

2          Check if the components made by different manufacturers have been intermixed.           

3          Check if the components made by different manufacturers have been modified in order to intermix them.            

4          Check if only compatible (fit together with out use of mechanical force) components have been intermixed with out compromising the structural integrity     

5          Check if the scaffold components are free from detrimental corrosion    

6          Remove excessively damaged, corroded scaffold components

7          Check if the scaffold components are made of dissimilar metals
           
8          Ensure sufficient precaution have been taken prior to exposure of scaffold components to acids or corrosive  substances      

9          Ensure threaded parts are lubricated and have attained full thread engangement 
10         Checks planks for defects, damage, decay and warping            

11         Ensure planks are not painted, treated or coated in any way that could conceal defects or obscure top and bottom surfaces          

12         Check if every scaffold and scaffold component is capable of supporting, without failure its own weight and atleast four times the maximum intended load applied or transmitted to it.    
     
13         Check if every scaffold has a load rating corresponding to maximum intended load   
     
14         Ensure deflection for platform units shall not exceed 1/60 th of the span length when supporting concentrated or uniformly distributed maximum intended load    

15         Check the foundation is capable of carrying the scaffold self weight plus the maximum intended load. Ensure the foundation floor is even and free from oil and other hazardous material.

16         Check unstable objects such as barrels, boxes, loose bricks, or concrete blocks are not used to support the scaffold, planks.          

17         Ensure that the scaffold post and frames are vertical and vertically braced in both direction to prevent swaying and displacement.  

18         Check any insulated power line less than 300 volts is at a distance of 1m (3 ft) from the scaffold. For insulated power line 300 volts to 50 Kv maintain a distance of 3m (10 ft) 

19         Check the base of the scaffold is at least 1.5 times the depth of the excavation away from the edges of the excavation       

20         Check if the base plate of the scaffold is at least 150mm x 150mm and 6mm thick     
    
21         Check if the castors for light and medium duty mobile scaffolds are at least 120mm (5 inches) and 170mm (7 inches) in diameter respectively

22         Check if all castors are fitted with a positive wheel lock
           
23         Ensure working area is not cantilevered 

24         Ensure planks are securely fixed in position      

25         Check if the uppermost work platform height does not exceed 4 times the minimum base dimension of any mobile or tower scaffold. Ensure provisions are taken to stabilize the scaffold against tipping     
  
26         Ensure guardrail system is provided on every platform
           
27         Ensure casters are locked at all times except during scaffold movement
           
28         Check all tie connections are made with right angle couplers
